Yea, them anti-immigration folks can be quite rabid, be careful. Before you know it, you'll have the minutemen site linking over to yours asking their folks to comment on your stuff (like they've done with previous polls in our local media, wildly skewing the results).

i agree that the view point is very much needed in our city- there is only "one" view point allowed and anyone who strays is ostracized, etc.. i think that tends to keep others from even thinking differently.

anyway, thanks again.

    THanks for reading.

I'm a big fan of "alternative" media and believe that we can accomplish a lot. I believe we (bloggers & other alt media) are going through the birthing process in el paso right now and the fruits of our labor will eventually pay off. already weve seen some pretty good stuff coming from davidk and jay k. at the times blog and even here that was not covered at all (or from certain angles) by the mainstream media and the only place you got it was from us. and while our readership is small (especially mine) compared to the mainstream's, its a beginning and its a voice thats getting out that wasn't before.

agian, thanks for reading.

    Dave,

Don't know if you are kidding or not but you are right at least about one thing- some on council do seriously want el paso to look like some uber-liberal yuppie utopia; and like i think you mentioned on your show, for most el pasoans, yuppopia means litte to them. they are more interested in getting a decent job and being able to pay their property taxes.

now yuppopia is fine if that is what the free market dictates but if big bro is ramming it down our throats....

Downtown isn't for Eastsiders, it's for white westsiders who want a downtown that looks like the one near them when they went to college somewhere else.

If their downtown is full of eastsiders and others they'll abandon that plan.

It most certainly is an unfunded mandate... although Im not too sure what unfunded mandate you are referring to. As far as the actual chips are concerned, while your proposal is certainly more reasonable than the current law, I still don't believe its govt's role to regulate pet ownership. If the chip is such a good idea, the idea will sell itself.

Microchips should have been required for any newly acquired animals(not retro active). The ones already owned should not be included. This way when a person decides to get the new fido or kitty,,,they know the extra cost needed. In say 10 years or so all the animals will have chips. I will also say that many of the pets will get chipped voluntarily. Also, what ever happend to unfunded mandate clause? This sounds like an unfunded mandate to me.

    Thanks AJ,
I really worked my tail off during the campaign. I didnt like the others on council, mayor and state reps getting into the races. I did like the idea of staggerd terms but didndt forsee this happening. I still like 4 year terms but think they should all run together to prevent the endorsements by elected officials. I am conservitive and independent and still like the notion that we could someday have a "run clean" campaign format. This is what I got dinged on as a "poll tax" but given the current state of affairs I think some new ways would be welcome. As for CC, I want our taxes lower. I dont see a clear plan on council to do this but I dont know if I will get another swing at the plate. I do like your participation and being involved for the betterment of our great city. We dont have to agree to both be able to participate. In fact I kinda like it that way. How boaring it would be if we all agreed all the time.

I was unfair in my characterization of your site. I think for the most part, its advisable to not put too much information on your site as it can only be used against you (RQ didn't).

Also, I think you handled yourself in a very classy way after your defeat and I applaud you for that. Unlike others, you conceded your defeat and gave credit where credit was due.. as opposed to someone like Steve Ortega who not only did not do either of the above but went on to vicously attack RQ-after her victory over JS.

I appreciate your experience and apparent independence and that you weren't "the chosen one" by the establishment and the way you carried yourself. I can see myself voting for you one day- although not for city council.

Good luck in all your endeavors.

    * Ill give you that the post was "posted rather ignorantly"- i'm not too fond of it myself. i usually just start writing down my ideas with the intention of "fixing" it up when i'm done writing- sometimes i don't get around to it.

*Whether JS has more to offer the city than RQ is debatable- I saw two young and inexperienced candidates- one understood why eminent domain was wrong and the other one didn't. one understood the importance of keeping taxes down- the other one didn't. the fact that the one that didn't had a yale degree made it that much worse for him.

*why people vote for a candidate is not black or white although i do take issue with your claim about hispanic women and voters. i'm sure it plays a role to a certain extent but one has only to look at all of the campaigns where hispanic women ran and didn't win to refute that argument.

*to his credit- JS seemingly acted in an honorable way after his loss (in spite of the example set by one of his mentors- Steve Ortega) and that reflects well upon him. furthermore, he is not an unlikable person and that obviously bodes well for him. he has his whole life ahead of him and it would behoove him to go get more experience and mature a bit more and come back and enter the political arena with that other egg in his basket.

Hey, I tried! And I kinda like the way my page turned out. I tried to make it such that it had expanding levels of information to acomidate those who were just interested in the short version or more substance if so desired. I am happy to know you took a look. By the way EH didnt have a site. Ms. Quintana worked hard for her victory and I congradulate her. It would be nice if EH would have public meetings like the other council persons. I hope Ms. Quintana does. TH

First of all, with all due respect, this was posted rather ignorantly. The problem was not "he was ugly or high schoolish". The problem is that the El Paso community makes decisions off of simply who the candidate is, not what they are and what they can contribute. Jim Suerken obviously had more to contribute to the City of El Paso and he could do this intelligently. El Paso needs leaders who are Yale graduates, who are prepared leaders to get this place up and going, for we are a place full of potential. El Pasoans are just voting for people because they are hispanic women... not because it will change or improve our city. I am really disappointed with the elections, and I can jst hope that Quintana can at least be decent to District 5, even though I have no doubt in my mind that she will not match Suerken's potential.

    Thanks for your comments.

I agree that the maquilla owners/corporations should offer their employees more protection; in fact, I believe that therein lies most of the solution.

Why?

Because I don't think its realistic to expect either the Juarez mayor/govt or our mayor/govt to be able to do much about the problem. I guess when you are a govt official in a 3rd world country, your priorities are probably elsewhere. Its not that I think they are blameless but just incapable of doing much- at this point.

My Solution?

Well i don't really have a solution but I believe that "we" can help by publicizing the problem and hopefully in doing so, shaming the Mexican govt into action- let them at least try to do something and maybe we can get lucky and stop these criminals. Also, hopefully, the maquilla owners are also shamed into doing more to protect their employees.

I would also like to tip my hat to those who actually made the video. I plan on posting more similar videos up in the future.

You do a good thing with your site and I was impressed with the care and compassion exhibited by the clearly young film makers in Unsettled Dust. Shame on the American Companies who offer no protection for their young and desperate employees. Shame on our elected officials on both sides of the border. Rather than "holding hands" with the Mayor of Juarez, while trying to shut down Asarco, perhaps our Mayor should be asking when the Mayor of Juarez is going to address this slaughter of young women and arrest the REAL culprits? Elected officials on our side like to talk about how we are one community and we don't like fences, yet they sit idly and quietly while our sisters are raped and murdered right next door. Nice neighbors, huh?

For starters Cook has no authority outside the City Limits, however he along with Shapeighly realizes that unlimited and unsupervised building is bad for the Comminity. As I read this bill it would creat the same type of building code and inspection system that all major areas in the country have
